I also find myself tired of AI discussions, but it’s hard to ignore in this context. It is now part of the candidate journey. In the U.S., more than half of employers are already incorporating AI into their hiring processes.

Delays in answering questions, or worse, ignoring them, are major factors that cast a shadow on a company’s image. Intelligent chatbots that answer candidate questions before a human enters the picture can help the business. This isn’t about eliminating the human factor, but about making the process smoother for both parties.

Working with Japanese culture offers opportunities to rethink how we see the world. It may even seem quite obvious, may it not? In reality, however, many reflections remain at a relatively superficial level. There are numerous aspects that are difficult even for Japanese people to fully soak in, let alone for foreigners trying to grasp a philosophical idea. I find wabi sabi to be one of them.

As you may not be familiar with the concept of wabi sabi, let us start with definitions. Wabi originally referred to simplicity, restraint and a life with few external supports. Over time, it came to describe an appreciation for the modest and the ordinary. Wabi is about choosing less on purpose and being comfortable with things that do not announce their value. Sabi, on the other hand, relates to time. It points to aging, wear and the quiet changes that happen as things are used and exposed to the world. Rust, patina, fading and slight damage all fall under sabi. Not as defects, but as evidence that something has lived and continues to exist.

In times of fast fashion and fast living, I find comfort in discussing wabi sabi in class. Very often the reflections are similar. We all fear aging to a certain extent. We store old souvenirs and clothes that remind us of memories we would like to keep. To me, wabi sabi is an idea that adds value to objects with history.

What’s more, we often overlook how little effort is actually needed to fix things that still work. Scratches, uneven surfaces and signs of use. What if we did not need to rush to hide them?

We often expect things to be finished and stable. Not only objects, but also work, routines and even emotional states. When something feels slow or inconsistent, the default response is to fix it, improve it or optimize it. Through a wabi sabi lens, another option appears. Fluctuation is not necessarily a problem. It is often just what happens when something exists over time. And truth be told, is that not the only realistic approach?

Architecture makes this especially visible. Many people find themselves drawn to spaces that show adjustment rather than reinvention. Buildings that have been modified, repaired and adapted. Places where history is not erased and repairs do not try to disappear. These spaces tend to feel easier to inhabit. Less staged. As if they are not trying to prove anything.

The same shift happens with objects. Some of us start using things for longer. Are we not tired of new models which are, in fact, exact copies with only tiny changes in shape or angle? Your favorite chipped mug still holds coffee. A scratched table still supports weight. After a while, these details stop signaling disorder and fade into the background.

Wabi sabi does not ask people to admire these things or feel grateful for them. It does not turn them into symbols. It removes the pressure to constantly evaluate.

This perspective often extends into work. Teaching, writing and learning take many forms, but their nature is repetitive. There are long periods when nothing feels new or impressive. These phases are easily labeled as stagnation. Through a wabi sabi perspective, they start to look more like maintenance. Skills staying functional through regular use. Quiet, unremarkable, but reliable and necessary to keep going.

It also shifts how effort is understood. Short bursts of intensity lose their appeal, while what holds up over time becomes more interesting. If something only works when motivation is high, it is unlikely to last. Systems that survive low energy days feel more realistic. Wabi sabi leaves room for that.

Along with this comes less internal urgency. Standards do not necessarily drop, but the impulse for constant correction weakens. Not everything needs refinement. Some things only need continuity.

Wabi sabi does not need to change what we aim for. It may, however, change how much imperfection we allow along the way and how comfortable we feel with it. It makes space for pauses that do not require justification and routines that do not point to a clear outcome.

Do you still remember a time when people were genuinely excited about their New Year’s resolutions, goals, and dreams? We (or at least I) imagined neat timelines and were driven by that familiar January optimism that assumed the world would politely cooperate. Set the goal, work hard, stay consistent, and voilà - it was going to happen.
How far are we from that now?

The global mood hasn’t exactly been cheering us on lately. Economic instability, political tension, burnout masquerading as ambition - none of this inspires joyful planning. For the past few years, I haven’t felt much excitement about the year ahead. No champagne. Little hope for calmer times. And yet, strangely enough, this emotional flatness has made me more realistic. Less idealistic, more grounded. And realism, it turns out, might be a far better ally when it comes to goals.

Instead of sketching out new goals this year, I’m focusing on what I’ve been working on for a long time. It’s that simple. The unglamorous, repetitive core. The things that don’t look impressive on a vision board but actually build skills and make me feel better on a daily basis. That said, I am in fact starting a new project, and yes, it brought a bit of freshness. However, the foundation remains the same. No revolution. More like maintenance with intention and one step at a time.

We often underestimate what calm, regular work can do over time. Not the kind that makes for exciting announcements, but the kind that compounds quietly. Showing up. Refining. Adjusting. Continuing even when motivation is low and hope is rationed. This approach doesn’t feel spectacular, but it’s sustainable and sustainability is wildly underrated.

I still believe it’s significant to set goals altogether, but also to rethink what we mean by them. Objectives viewed as direction, not as pressure. In a world that doesn’t encourage optimism, regular effort can be a form of freedom.

These are, of course, my personal reflections, shaped by conversations, observations, and a growing skepticism. I’m curious how you feel about this shift.

When people talk about entrepreneurship, they often think of quirky billionaires who, from time to time, like to deliver commencement speeches about hard work and a people-first attitude right before announcing another round of layoffs. How ironic that the majority of entrepreneurs you meet every day are not quite like the wealthy names featured in Forbes.

Imagine an extensive and dense forest. The big players are the redwoods. Their roots reach deep into the ground, they shape the ecosystem, and they tower over everything else. Being a solopreneur myself, I identify as a squirrel in this big brave world. But why a squirrel? They need to be quick, alert, a bit gutsy, and constantly adapting to a landscape built for much bigger players.

The entrepreneurial mindset is a recurring topic in class. Not only is it popular among business owners, but it is also trending among corporate employees who are considering a career shift. Among them, plenty of people would love to try something new, but they keep saying: “C’mon, I’m not as innovative as *now put any name of a ridiculously wealthy guy”. Guess what. You don’t need to be. Let me tell you more. You could be better than them and still fail. Success is more complex than that. I believe it’s crucial to differentiate between entrepreneurs with different goals and operating at various scales.

My experiences and thoughts more or less boil down to this:

Big business vs. Micro-business

• Strategy vs. Priorities: It’s great to have a vision, but paying bills comes first! Stick to what works now and develop the rest once the cash-flow basics are covered.

• Innovation vs. Adaptability: Unpopular opinion now! Many of us really don’t need highly-advanced AI to have a thriving business. It’s definitely good to know how to use it, but in certain industries it’s simply not as applicable as much as the tech world wants us to believe.

• Risk management vs. Calculated leaps: It’s easy. Don’t stop doing what’s working for the sake of a revolutionary idea, because it may not turn out to be as such. Big business may keep on failing without harm for much more time than you.

• Brand consistency vs. Personal connection: This is exactly where AI will not help you. Corporate business can’t run on people-first fuel. For a solopreneur it’s easier to do.

• Scaling vs. Sustainability: It’s my personal opinion, but I believe it’s absolutely OK not to want to scale your business if you’re a freelancer. As long as you’re happy with your life and career, have a reasonable plan B in case something goes wrong, why would you change it?

At the end of the day, being a squirrel in a forest of redwoods isn’t a disadvantage. We’re a significant part of the ecosystem. It’s simply a different way of operating. Maybe more dynamic, self-aware, creative and grounded in reality.

We rarely find moments when we can spare a couple of hours to meet our friends, boil some water for tea or coffee, and have a genuine conversation. No elevator pitches, no bragging about our latest projects. All we need to do is leave the constant buzz of politics, gossip and background noise outside the room and simply talk. No small talk, no big talk. Just a regular one. The kind that fits on the sofa without breaking it.

We get to know people better when we learn about their favorite tea flavor, their recent engagement in new projects or their decision to take a break from them. We understand more when they spill the tea or when they choose to stay silent. The elevator pitch culture kills authenticity. Not because it makes us brag about successes we may or may not have, but because it makes us afraid of being judged for sharing our failures. Even (or especially) with those closest to us.

As a language trainer, I find it essential to develop my conversation skills. And I don’t just mean vocabulary or grammar (though those matter too). Active listening and building rapport with my students have become my top priorities. One day I’ll probably write more about my approach, but there’s one skill that many of us develop over our careers. A rare talent these days. We’ve learned that it’s possible to have enjoyable and meaningful conversations with almost anyone. You just need to find the right doors and the key. It’s that simple.

When we talk, not just chat, but truly talk, we discover how much we have in common. A shared laugh, a similar struggle, a memory that suddenly makes sense only when spoken out loud. We realize that even when our lives look completely different on the surface, there’s often a quiet thread connecting our stories underneath.

Conversations are a kind of mirror. They show us not only who the other person is, but who we are when we listen attentively, when we don’t rush to fill the silence. In those moments, we stop performing and start connecting.

These conversations can be challenging, sometimes uncomfortable or even unpredictable, especially in an intercultural context. But that’s also what makes it powerful. They’ve made me question things I took for granted, revisit some of my assumptions, and occasionally realize I maybe I should have alter a thing or two. And that, my dear, is a very good thing.

I’m grateful that by supporting others in learning languages, I get to expand my own knowledge about the world, new technologies, company cultures, and, last but not least, fish reproductive systems. I keep finding myself curious about the most unexpected things. And these conversations drive me.
